Moving Away From Brazil

Last reviewed 2026-08-20 · Next review due 2026-09-20

Leaving Brazil involves two distinct Receita Federal filings — a same-year exit communication and a follow-up tax declaration the next year — plus the usual practical steps of closing accounts, arranging pet paperwork, and giving your shipping company enough lead time to pack and ship a container before you go.

Why people leave

People leave Brazil for a mix of reasons: international job opportunities and secondments, retirement abroad on a foreign pension, and family reunification with relatives who emigrated earlier are among the most common. Others are drawn by currency stability or a different cost-of-living profile than Brazil's major cities offer, particularly during periods of higher domestic inflation. As with most countries, the decision is rarely purely financial — a spouse's job, children's schooling, or simply wanting a change after years in one place are just as often the deciding factor as any single economic push. Whatever the reason, the practical side of the move looks similar for most households: winding down tax and banking obligations at home while a container makes its way to the new one.

Departure checklist

  1. File the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva do País with Receita Federal online at csdp.receita.fazenda.gov.br, covering the period from your departure date through 28 February of the following year.
  2. File the follow-up Declaração de Saída Definitiva do País in the year after departure, by the normal annual tax-return deadline, and settle any tax owed. Keep proof of both filings, since banks and any future re-entry or tax processes may request them.
  3. Close or convert Brazilian bank accounts and cancel local credit cards.
  4. Obtain a Certificado Veterinário Internacional (CVI) via gov.br for any pet you're exporting — the certificate is tailored to your destination country — along with rabies vaccination and a veterinary health check.
  5. Cancel or transfer vehicle registration with DETRAN and cancel vehicle insurance if you're not shipping the car.
  6. Cancel your plano de saúde (private health plan) registration and settle any final invoices.
  7. Redirect mail and close or transfer utility accounts.
  8. Arrange school withdrawal transcripts in good time if you have children enrolled.
  9. Notify the Receita Federal of any address change for your CPF (individual taxpayer registry) once you're settled abroad, since it stays active for future filings.

Exit tax and customs

Brazil's Receita Federal requires a two-step exit process: a Comunicação de Saída Definitiva do País, filed online (at csdp.receita.fazenda.gov.br) covering the period from your departure date through 28 February of the following year, and a follow-up Declaração de Saída Definitiva do País filed the next year by the normal annual tax-return deadline, settling any tax owed. Skipping these filings doesn't cancel your Brazilian tax obligations — it just leaves them open.
